Yalenka is a dedicated and charitable organization that teaches Ukrainian dancing to students of all ages in an environment that promotes commitment, self-confidence, and the enjoyment and learnings of the Ukrainian heritage.
Since its establishment in 1970, as the first Ukrainian dance school of its kind in Calgary, Yalenka has been an organization rich in history, traditions, and culture. From its early beginnings of a small group practicing in a church basement to a well-established organization consisting of over 90 students ranging in ages from 3 to 45; a world-class artistic director from Ukraine; exceptionally talented and dedicated instructors; an instrumental board of directors consisting of parent volunteers and dancers; plus a strong commitment of preserving the Ukrainian culture – Yalenka is an organization that strives to instill the cultural values and heritage of our ancestors.
As Yalenka continues to grow and expand, and with dance studio space becoming more difficult to obtain, Yalenka has deemed it necessary to acquire its own functional dance studio space. Therefore, the group has launched an impressive fundraising initiative designed to assist with the development of the Calgary Ukrainian Cultural Centre of Excellence which will continue fostering the Ukrainian culture through dance, community, and history.
This Ukrainian Cultural Centre of Excellence will include:
- Multiple dance studios with the appropriate flooring and mirrors;
- A storage facility for the wealth of Ukrainian costumes Yalenka owns;
- A banquet hall with an abundance of seating, a large performance area, and kitchen with full amenities which can be rented out to any personal or cultural group. This rental facility will subsidize Yalenka with the financial support required to maintain the Centre;
- A common welcoming and gathering area; as well as
- The intention of housing a Ukrainian library and historic artifacts.
The success of the Yalenka organization has largely been due to the contributions of our sponsors who have been instrumental in their financial lending or other support to the group. Yalenka requires the support of donors like you to continue to develop the Ukrainian culture in Calgary. As a registered charity, donors would receive a taxable receipt for 100% of their donation. The minimum donation requirement is $250.
The Yalenka organization, its families, students, instructors, and the board of directors would be extremely grateful for your donation or any support you can provide to help us in preserving the Ukrainian culture in Calgary. Thank you in advance for your support. Please contact us if you have any questions, would like additional information, or how you can become a Yalenka partner.
